A military bunker located near the village of Wommelgem, in the province of Antwerp, Belgium, Bunker VA21 is part of the KW-Linie (Kessel-Willebroek Line), a defensive fortification system constructed by the Belgian Army in 1939–1940 in anticipation of German invasion during World War II. The KW-Linie was designed to protect key industrial regions and slow an advancing enemy by integrating bunkers, anti-tank obstacles, and infantry positions along natural barriers such as the Dyle and Willebroek canals.

Bunker VA21 is a standard Belgian Type VA21 infantry bunker, one of over 100 such structures built along the KW-Linie. These bunkers were typically constructed of reinforced concrete with thick walls and small firing slits for rifles and light machine guns, designed to accommodate a crew of 6–8 soldiers. The structure was intended to provide mutual fire support with adjacent bunkers and to cover key road and rail approaches. Unlike German Regelbau bunkers, Belgian designs like the VA21 were simpler, more standardized, and focused on local terrain integration.

After the German invasion in May 1940, the KW-Linie saw limited but fierce combat during the Battle of Belgium. Though overwhelmed by the speed of the Blitzkrieg, many bunkers, including VA21, were captured intact. Post-war, the bunker was largely abandoned and remained hidden under vegetation for decades. Today, it is a preserved relic of pre-WWII Belgian military engineering, occasionally visited by military history enthusiasts and urbex explorers. The site remains structurally intact, with its concrete shell and embrasures still visible, though without interior furnishings or signage.

This bunker is a key example of interwar European defensive architecture and contributes to the broader understanding of Belgium’s pre-war military preparedness. As part of the KW-Linie network, it is listed in Belgian military heritage inventories as a protected historical site.
