In 1943, 3 machine gun bunkers were built by the German occupiers to defend the bridges near Nijmegen. These bunkers were located in the Valkhof Park, which had been converted into a position by the Germans. Spread across the park was a system of trenches that, among other things, connected the bunkers. Of the 3 bunkers, only 1 remains, which is known as the Valkhofbunker. The first bunker in the park was demolished in 1947 and the demolition of the second took place in the 1980s during a renovation of the park. The last bunker, a double machine gun bunker, is still located in the city wall that runs around the park and is still in a good condition. The Valkhofbunker Foundation recently received permission to open the bunker to the public and is still waiting for the right time to open the bunker, which was hermetically sealed in 1947.
