This concrete bunker is one of the estimated 750,000 defensive structures built across Albania during the communist era's 'bunkerisation' program, which lasted from 1967 to 1986. Located near Durrës, Albania's second-largest city and major port on the Adriatic coast, this structure represents the country's extreme approach to civil defense during the Cold War. The Albanian government, under Enver Hoxha's leadership, constructed these ubiquitous mushroom-shaped bunkers in every conceivable location - from beaches and mountain passes to city streets and even cemeteries - as a physical manifestation of the regime's isolationist policies and fear of foreign invasion.
